Happenings at Skylark - June 2021
Celebrating Summer and Skylark for Seniors
June is here and the lazy days of summer have arrived! Here in Minnesota summer is off to a great start. Skylark for Seniors is off to a great start, too! Performances begin this month, starting at Ebenezer’s Ridges campus in Burnsville. Seniors love the music and our performers love being in front of an audience—it’s a mutual admiration society! Skylark for Seniors is supported by generous grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. Thanks also to our individual, foundation and corporate donors, who have made our summer and fall programming possible.
Good News for Minnesota Theater-Goers
The long-awaited news that we can all gather again means stages are opening up across Minnesota. Audiences have more and more opportunities to experience live stage productions. We couldn’t be more delighted that audiences are returning and enjoying the social opportunities that only live theater can bring.
Here’s some more good news from Skylark Opera. We will be presenting Amahl and the Night Visitors in the 200-seat Andy Boss Thrust Stage at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul for nine performances in December—a beautiful venue where the audience surrounds the action and an exciting pairing of Skylark’s talented performers and the Park Square Theatre.
Skylark Connections
Our friends at Really Spicy Opera are offering a fascinating insight into the process of opera composing. Check out their online Aria institute for Composers and Librettists - www.spicyopera.com. Our always-inventive Twin Cities arts colleague, Basil Considine, is in charge of the proceedings - and his co-director is our much-loved Skylark alum, Tess Altiveros (The Tragedy of Carmen and Cosi fan Tutte). Best wishes, Basil and Tess, for this important endeavor!
Skylark Opera Theatre has received a bequest from the estate of Joan T. Smith. Ms. Smith was an enthusiastic patron of orchestra, opera, many local theaters, and dance programs in the Twin Cities. She traveled extensively and wherever in the world she was, her love of music theater shone through. We are so grateful for her generosity.
Skylark also has long-standing donors who continue to honor us with their support. The GiveMN “Spring Forward MN” campaign from May 1-May 11 was another example of unwavering support for our unique take on opera and music theater. The words of appreciation and encouragement that we receive from our donors help to energize us. Thanks to each and every one of you!
