Happenings at Skylark Opera Theatre November 2024
Meet the most lovable spider since Charlotte's Web
The Christmas Spider is an opera even an arachnophobe will love! A poor woodcutter and his two children face a bleak Christmas until a friendly spider creates holiday magic. Based on a Ukrainian folk tale, this heartwarming story is a reminder that kindness and hope are all around us. Bring the family to the Minnesota premiere of composer Clint Borzoni's and librettist John de los Santos’ charming holiday opera.
Skylark is thrilled to announce that the librettist for The Christmas Spider, John de los Santos, will serve as stage director for the production. Mr. de los Santos has been called a “brilliant combination of literary insight and choreographic creativity” (D Magazine). He has staged a range of productions that include opera, musicals, plays, ballet, concerts, and workshop readings. His upcoming engagements include librettist for an operatic adaptation of Stephen King's Misery for Minnesota Opera's New Works Initiative.
Tickets are available now. Five performances, December 19-22 at the Lowry Lab Theater, 350 St. Peter St., St. Paul. Only 100 seats per performance. Get your tickets here.
2024-2025 Season: A Cultural Celebration of Opera
In its 45th season, Skylark celebrates operatic expression across cultures, which began with the 3rd annual OktOpera Fest, featuring the works of German-born composer Kurt Weill. Skylark's holiday production continues the celebration with The Christmas Spider, based on a Ukrainian folk tale. In February 2025, the 2nd annual Sip of Opera will be a joyous evening of music from the Black diaspora, curated by baritone Jeremiah Sanders. In April 2025, join Skylark for a free celebration of Mexican operetta, Zarzuela!, at the Landmark Center, curated by soprano Lily Guerrero. A unique event closes out the season: The New Seven Deadly Sins, bringing new perspectives to opera through a fusion of seven opera selections with interpretive dance.
